Brand history
After his mother remarried, Karl Anderson Jr. took his stepfather's surname and henceforth called himself Michael David Kors. The two first names are fictitious. The designer started in the early eighties with an education at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. When he founded his fashion brand "Michael Kors LLC", and found a job as a sales manager in a boutique, this was reason enough for Kors to drop out of school. He wanted to focus entirely on his own brand.

His work in the boutique also gave him the opportunity to market his first collection. With his designed clothes made of beautiful materials and a classic, minimalist cut, he quickly gained a foothold in the New York fashion world. In 1984 he was able to write his first fashion show on his moon. Michael Kors suffered a setback in his ambitious career when he tried to launch a cheaper second line called "Kors". Due to the low sales figures, he had to file for bankruptcy.

In collaboration with the Japanese fashion group Onward Kashiyama, the current owner of Jil Sander, the designer dared to try his second line again and was successful. During this great success, a French public limited company bought 33 percent of the shares of Michael Kors and the fashion designer continued to expand his range in the following years. Over time, a men's collection, shoes, perfumes and accessories were added to the women's clothing. In 2003, Sportswear Limited" from Hong Kong approached the company Kors and purchased 85 percent of the label for an estimated $100 million.
