By June 1942, it was at the forefront during the Battle of Midway, where SBD squadrons delivered devastating blows to the Japanese carrier fleet, sinking four carriers in just a matter of days. Despite being considered outdated by some at the time, the Dauntless proved its worth with rugged construction, accuracy in dive-bombing, and reliable performance.
