A Significant Japanese Naval Aircraft The Nakajima B5N2 was the most numerous Japanese torpedo bomber of the Second World War. During the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, B5N2 aircraft struck US warships with torpedoes and bombs, taking a heavy toll during the devastating raid. The type subsequently saw action at the Battle of the Coral Sea and Midway. This single-engine monoplane carried one rearward-firing machine gun operated by the radio operator. Although its relatively low speed left it vulnerable to enemy fighters, the B5N2 proved effective in its intended attack role and became closely associated with Japan's early wartime carrier operations.
