SOFT PASTE, NO HEATING - This red honing compound is a genuinely soft paste, not a hard bar you have to warm up or grind into the hide. Load a paddle, hanging or barber strop with light, fast strokes until the surface takes on colour, then draw the blade to spread the strop paste into a thin, even film. About 1-2 g covers 100 cm2, so one 100 g tin gives roughly 50-100 loadings. No hairdryer is needed, although warming the hide briefly does help penetration if you want it. The aluminium tin closes with a screw lid, so whatever you do not use will not dry out or crumble between sharpening sessions. FEEDS THE LEATHER AS IT WORKS - Beeswax and real lanolin are blended into the formula, so every loading conditions the hide instead of drying it out. This is a leather safe formula: dry sticks and wax bars clog the pores and leave the surface hard and brittle, while ours keeps the hide naturally supple and slightly tacky. That tack increases drag on the blade, which gives you noticeably more control over the angle and a cleaner result. A flexible surface grips the bevel properly, so you feel it seat itself instead of skating over glazed, hardened hide. Your strop is the expensive part of the setup, and this looks after it. MEDIUM 2000 GRIT AT 4-5 MICRON - The opening pass: it strips the burr a coarse stone leaves behind and evens out the micro-saw along the cutting edge before you move to a finer grit. Bacher runs four grits - red 2000 at 4-5 micron, white 5000 at 2-2.5 micron, green 8000 at 0.9-1.1 micron and black 12000 at 0.4-0.6 micron for a mirror. Every batch goes through our own micron sieve process, which is why the abrasive content is high and the particle tolerance is unusually tight - one predictable grit, not a scattering of stray coarse grains that puts marks straight back into the bevel. Suits kitchen and hunting knives, straight razors, chisels, gouges and carving tools. NOT ONLY FOR LEATHER - It charges felt, wool, sisal, canvas, linen and cotton just as happily, including buffing wheels and polishing discs run in a drill or on a bench grinder. Beyond stainless blades you can bring high carbon steel, aluminium, copper, bronze, brass, gold and silver up to a high gloss, which makes it handy for polishing jewellery by hand with a cloth or with the round applicator disc supplied in the pack. Apply sparingly - a smear is plenty - and let the wheel or the hide do the work rather than pressing hard, because pressure rounds a bevel instead of refining it. The limit worth stating plainly: this sharpening compound is a finishing product for a blade that is already sharp. It takes off the burr, refines the scratch pattern and polishes to a shine, but it will not remove chips or revive a blunt knife - a sharpening stone has to come first.
