Ricasoli is the oldest winery in Italy, and the fourth oldest family run wine estate in the world. Baron Bettino Ricasoli invented the Chianti formula in 1872, and today Ricasoli is the largest winery in the Chianti Classico area with Brolio Castle surrounded by 1,200 hectares of land including 235 hectares of vineyards. Since 2013, Gran Selezione is categorised as the highest quality level of wine produced within the historic Chianti Classico production area. In order to gain this coveted status, Castello di Brolio is produced with the best 10% of the grapes taken from the harvest. A blend of Sangiovese (90%), Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%) taken from the best family vineyards. Castello di Brolio is the flagship Ricasoli wine. In 2009, Wine Spectator included Castello di Brolio at 5th place in their influential Top 100 wines of the year list.
