Herdwick is the wiry, hard-wearing fleece off the Lake District fells, in natural greys that run from near-black to silver. No dye goes anywhere near it. It is a coarse wool, which makes it wrong for a next-to-skin jumper and right for felting, rug-making, upholstery stuffing and garden use. Bought direct from farms in the English Lake District, then washed and scoured in Bradford. The farmers get a fair price for it, which is less common than it should be. Wool holds a lot of moisture without feeling wet and composts when it is done. Gardeners use it as a slug barrier and a moisture store. Sold from 500g up to 7kg. 10% of profit goes to Buy Land Plant Trees CIC.
