Feldman plays Brother Ambrose, a simple and naive monk who has spent his entire life sheltered within the walls of his monastery. When the monastery faces foreclosure, Ambrose is sent out into the dazzling and bewildering modern world of Los Angeles with a mission: raise $5.000 to save his home. What follows is a hysterical fish-out-of-water adventure as the innocent monk navigates the temptations and absurdities of secular life. His path collides with a cast of unforgettable characters, including a shifty con man, Dr. Sebastian Melmoth, played by the legendary Richard Pryor, and a kind-hearted prostitute with a plan, Mary, portrayed by the wonderful Louise Lasser. The main feature of this film is its incredible, once-in-a-lifetime cast. The comedic energy is electric, especially when Ambrose encounters the bombastic and commercially-driven televangelist, Armageddon T. Thunderbird, brought to life by the uniquely eccentric Andy Kaufman in a truly memorable performance. The film is a brilliant satire on organized religion, consumerism, and the nature of faith, all wrapped in a package of slapstick, witty dialogue, and Feldman´s signature visual gags.
