Third-release single cask, 19-year-old whisky finished 2 years in Bordeaux red wine casks for rich, wine-influenced depth. Distilled in 2001, matured 17 years before finishing in a first-fill Bordeaux barrique, paired with a Beira-inspired label. Laphroaig Scottish Folklore Series 3rd Release Single Malt Scotch 19 year old 53.9% ABV Nose: Sweet and musty at first, like freshly trampled grapes. A richness of black cherry jam on wholemeal toast unfolds, then the toastiness sharpens into a full-burning peat fire, undercut by grated nutmeg and Laphroaig’s distinctive algal iodine. Palate: Dense and chewy on the tongue, like a dark malt loaf studded with dried cherries and pecan nuts. A heavy oakiness is a solid anchor, around which flavours of honey-glazed ham, smoked paprika and laver cake coalesce. Finish: Once the smoke has cleared (which takes a little while), there’s a lingering note of after-dinner brandy and praline chocolates. Those ones that are shaped like seashells.
