Twelve millimetres of pure Herdwick wool felt, which gives a proper resilient bounce under a wool carpet rather than the dead flatness you get from a thin foam underlay. It deadens footfall and takes the edge off the noise between floors, which is why it also gets laid under floorboards and in home studios, not just under carpet. Wool is naturally breathable, so the floor isn't sealed under a plastic membrane, and it manages moisture instead of trapping it the way foam and rubber can. It lasts for decades and composts at the end, which is not something you can say about most underlay. One roll covers ten square metres at 12mm thick.
