The UK variant incorporates additional communication and navigation equipment, a thermal imaging system, and Shtora-1 electro-optical countermeasures. Entering service in the 1990s, it combined the high-speed performance of a gas turbine engine with advanced battlefield management systems. The UK model added satellite navigation, secure communications, and improved fire-control systems, as well as the Shtora-1 active protection suite. Although expensive to produce, the T-80UK served as a technological showcase and remains in limited use with Russian and foreign forces.
