Application and Preparation

Before you start painting, ensure the temperature is above 10°C and check the weather forecast to avoid rain. Ronseal Garden Paint is not suitable for decking.

For new wood, allow it to weather for six weeks to enable existing coatings to wash away. After weathering, lightly sand the surface to remove any loose fibres and splinters, and wipe it down with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirit.

Old paint should be sanded down thoroughly to eliminate loose material and to create a smooth surface. Clean the surface with white spirit to remove dirt or grease, and address any mould or algae. Remove rotten wood by either cutting it away or hardening it.
