History: During the early Republican period, Roman cavalry was drawn from the wealthier classes and equipped in a variety of styles, often influenced by their Italic or Hellenistic neighbours. These horsemen played a vital role in screening flanks, pursuing fleeing enemies, and countering enemy cavalry. As Rome expanded its influence, allied units such as the Etruscans and mercenary Carthaginian riders were frequently absorbed into Roman service. The mixed armour, including mail, pectoral plates, and muscled cuirasses, reflects this diversity. Their effectiveness, though sometimes overshadowed by Roman infantry, was crucial in the wide-ranging wars of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE.
