Distinct from peasants and noble knights, they often fought in disciplined formations, wielding spears, swords, and crossbows in defence of castles, during crusades, or in feudal warfare. Many were employed year-round, particularly by orders like the Templars and Hospitallers, and played vital roles in both battlefield tactics and siege operations.
