These frames have nails 1.25" apart to make pom poms approximately 1.25" in diameter. Why choose dowels? Generally a nicer looming experience. No sharp or dirty nails which can cause snags and imperfections to your wool. Nails can bend, become wobbly and even come off over time. Dowels are much sturdier. Looms that are handmade can often have nails that are not perfectly straight, causing uneven pom poms. This is not a problem with dowels.
