Pipistrello - a timeless table lamp like a work of art The fact that this table lamp has won several design awards is hardly surprising in its appearance. Pipistrello is a unique work of art from the Italian light maker Martinelli Luce. It consists of a colourfully painted metal base and is crowned by a four-tiered opal-white lampshade. Between the base and the shade there is a telescopic bar made of satined stainless steel with which the table lamp height can be adjusted from 66 cm to 86 cm. The matt surface of the shade creates an even light which sets the tone and enhances a comfortable ambience. Martinelli Luce lights appear inspired by nature and geometric shapes from which functional lighting systems are created. These consist of materials that reflect the true characteristics of the lights. Some of these unique lights are exhibited in the most important design museums in the world. Martinelli Luce offers not only private lighting, but also technical systems specifically designed for use in offices, shops, hotels, and other public areas. The focus here is on modern technologies that optimize energy consumption and offer new possibilities for developing lighting.

Lamp MastersThe world-famous Pipistrello table lamp was designed by the female designer and architect Gae Aulenti in 1965. Aside from her numerous architectural masterpieces, including the refurbishing of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the restoration of the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Aulenti has also designed products for Artemide, Louis Vuitton, and Martinelli Luce. The table is inspired in equal parts by a sharp focus on function and the organic shapes of nature. The lampshade is designed to look like the wings of a bat, hence the name that means ‘bat’ in Italian. Just like various other designers in post-war Europe, Gae Aulenti is fascinated by the new avant-garde school of design, and this fascination is reflected in the lamp’s experimental touch. The lamp consists of a lacquered metal stand, a stainless steel telescope stand that makes it easy to adjust the height of the light, and a lampshade made from opal-white methacrylate. The on/off button is located on the cable.
