The McAlpine MacValve Self-Closing Waste Valve is a plumbing fitting designed to control the flow of waste water from sinks or basins. It features a membrane that opens under water pressure to allow discharge to flow freely and then closes to form a tight seal that helps prevent foul odours or sewer gases from entering the building. The valve can be fitted in horizontal or vertical orientations and is suitable for installations where a non-return device is beneficial. When installed horizontally, the flow arrow must be in the uppermost position. The valve is constructed from white ABS plastic and is available in multiple inlet sizes, including 1 1/2 inch (40 mm) and related options. It can also be used to take discharge from a pressure relief valve on unvented domestic hot water storage systems. A key feature is that there is no water seal that can dry out through evaporation or lack of use, as the membrane remains sealed.
