The 0.5mm medium point of this pen is a good balance between the 0.7mm thicker point, which is a Western European standard width for a medium point, and the 0.38mm fine point. The 0.5 mm tip is ideal for most types of paper and ink as a 0.7 mm tip is often too thick and can lead to excessive ink bleeding on lower quality papers, and 0.38 mm is often too thin unless you are doing highly detailed writing, in fact 0.38 mm is often referred to as the 'financial tip' as it allows it to be used for filling out financial documents.
