The 0.5mm medium tip of this pen is a good balance between the thicker 0.7mm nib, which is a standard Western European gauge for a medium tip, and the 0.38mm fine tip. The 0.5mm nib is ideal for most paper and ink types as a 0.7mm nib is often too thick and can lead to excess ink bleeding on inferior papers. 0.38mm is often too fine if you don't write very detailed. In fact, 0.38mm is often referred to as "financial spring" because of its precision it can be used to fill in financial books. Store ledgers where accuracy and requirement for no smudging were paramount.
