Preparation for Application

Successful application of Ronseal Ultimate Protection Decking Oil is crucial for achieving the best results. Follow these preparation guidelines based on the condition of your decking:

# Untreated, Weathered Decking

For untreated and greyed wood, employ Ronseal Decking Restorer to bring back the natural colour of your deck. This preparation step is essential for ensuring that the oil adheres well to the surface.

# Previously Treated Decking

If your deck has been previously treated, use Ronseal Decking Cleaner to eliminate dust, grease, oil, mildew, and algae. Remove any loose, flaking, or peeling coatings to avoid a patchy finish. If changing to a contrasting colour, ensure all previous finishes are stripped away using Ronseal Decking Stripper. It’s also important to protect cut ends with Ronseal Decking End Grain Preserver.

# New Wood

New decking typically arrives with a waterproofing treatment that can inhibit oil adhesion. To remedy this, allow the wood to weather naturally for around six months or scrub it with Ronseal Decking Cleaner & Reviver before application. Rinse thoroughly with water, ideally using a pressure washer, and test for adhesion by sprinkling water on the surface. If beading occurs, additional cleaning is required.

4. Apply two coats, allowing four hours of drying time between the coats. After 24 hours, your deck is ready for furniture placement and regular use.
