Non-nano zinc oxide is often sold without being explicitly labeled as "non-nano" for several commercial, legal and technical reasons. Here are the main explanations: In many jurisdictions (including the European Union), the mention of "nano" is mandatory only if the product contains nano ingredients, not if it does NOT. If zinc oxide is non-nano, the manufacturer is not required to write "non-nano" on the label. If it contains nanoparticles, then labeling as "[nano]" would be mandatory according to Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 on cosmetic products. We avoid writing NON NANO on the label because it can be confused with mandatory labels ( NANO ) knowing in the industry that Zinc Oxide labeled simply "zinc oxide" actually refers to NON NANO. Manufacturers avoid mislabeling in order not to conflict with regulations.
