Herdwick is the wiry, hard-wearing fleece off the Lake District fells, in natural greys that run from near-black to silver. No dye goes anywhere near it at any stage, so what you get is the sheep's own colour. It's a coarse wool, which makes it wrong for a next-to-skin jumper and right for felting, needle felting, rug-making, upholstery stuffing and general craft and garden use. Bought direct from farms in the English Lake District, then washed and scoured in Bradford. The farmers get a fair price for it, which is rarer in the wool trade than it ought to be. Wool holds a lot of moisture without feeling wet and composts when it's done, so gardeners also use it as a slug barrier and a slow-release moisture store around plants. Sold from 500g up to 7kg, so you can buy the amount your project needs. 10% of profit goes to Buy Land Plant Trees CIC.
